Ten things to do in La Ventana, Baja California Sur
Sometimes a change of scene is all you want: time away from the daily rush, with space to enjoy the outdoors and your own company. Picture sunrise over the sea, a night sky full of stars and a choice of ways to spend the hours in between. That is the La Ventana we want to share with you.
From our glamping tents at ChiloChill, with the Milky Way overhead on clear nights, there is plenty to explore. Here are ten ideas for a stay that brings together the sea, the desert and a slower pace.
- Kitesurfing, kitefoiling and windfoiling (October to May)
From October to May, wind sports are a big part of life in La Ventana. Kitesurfing, kitefoiling and windfoiling bring people out onto the Sea of Cortez, from those taking their first lessons to riders with years on the water. The wind and sea conditions shape each session.
2. Mountain biking
Explore La Ventana on two wheels. The trails take you through desert and coastal scenery, with routes through forests of towering cardón cacti and more technical singletrack and enduro terrain to the north. E-bikes offer another way to explore. Choose a route that suits your experience and the day's conditions.
- Marine wildlife watching (sea safari)
The Sea of Cortez is home to a remarkable variety of marine life. A sea safari is a chance to look for dolphins, schools of mobula rays, whales and, occasionally, orcas. What you see depends on the season and the day; part of the experience is heading out with a local captain to discover what is there.
4. Watch sunrise from your glamping tent
At ChiloChill, the morning light spreads across the sea in front of the glamping tents. Take your time watching the sky change colour before the day begins. When conditions allow, a sunrise paddleboard session offers another view, with the first light turning the water gold.
5. Stargazing
On clear nights, look up from ChiloChill and spend a while with the stars. You may see the Milky Way or catch a shooting star. Our host has been known to bet dinner on someone spotting one, a small tradition that gives everyone a reason to keep watching.
6. Fishing and a meal from your catch
Head onto the Sea of Cortez with a local captain for the “Catch of the Day” experience. Fishing and having the restaurant prepare your catch bring the trip back to the table, with the flavours of local cooking. Ask about the details when planning your outing.
- Freediving, scuba diving and snorkelling
Explore La Ventana below the surface through freediving, scuba diving or snorkelling. The reefs and marine life reveal another side of the Sea of Cortez. These activities call for different skills and guidance, so ask which options are available for your visit and experience.
- Enjoy the beach and ChiloChill beach club
Settle into the rustic setting of the ChiloChill beach club, order something refreshing and give yourself time to rest after a day out. The sea, the sun and the breeze are good reasons to stay a little longer.
- Towfoiling: learn to foil
Towfoiling offers the sensation of lifting above the water on a foil board while a boat provides the pull. The original story describes it as riding a magic carpet: a new way to experience the sea. Ask about sessions and conditions for your dates.
- Yoga and holistic sessions
Make time for yoga or a holistic session, with the sound of the sea nearby and a break from the day's activities. It can be a quieter part of your visit: time to move, breathe and pay attention to yourself.
Bonus: a motorcycle ride and local food
Round out your time in La Ventana with the local “vuelta a la manzana”, a loop by motorcycle, and a taste of Baja's food culture. From fish tacos to more elaborate cooking, the area's markets and restaurants offer plenty of reasons to stop along the way.
The changing seasons: autumn and spring
Autumn and spring are among our favourite times here. These transition seasons can bring a mix of activities and a quieter pace than the busiest weeks. The weather, wind and marine life change through the year, giving each visit its own character.
At ChiloChill, a day can hold an adventure, time outdoors and a quiet evening under La Ventana's stars. We look forward to sharing this place with you.
